Philadelphia Department of Public Health Releases Prescribing Guidelines
The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (DPH) released a health update entitled, "Opioid and Benzodiazepines Prescribing Guidelines", on Friday, December 2nd. Here is a link to the document: https://hip.phila.gov.
NOTE: the Philadelphia's DPH (vs. the Department of Behavioral Health [DBH]) unveiled these guidelines. I am not aware of any legal or regulatory authority that DPH has to mandate enforcement of these guidelines.
For sake of information, the medical director of the city's Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) is Larry Real, MD, one of our members who also served as a co-creator of the DOH Benzodiazepine prescribing guidelines. The state guidelines were approved by the DOH Safe Prescribing Practices Workgroup (of which Dr. Rich Sobel and I represent the Society), but await approval/endorsement by the appropriate state licensing boards.
If you have any additional questions or need more information, do not hesitate to contact DPH at firstname.lastname@example.org. Although I will be sending out to the Philadelphia Psychiatric Society listserve, feel free to distribute to your colleagues as appropriate. Thanks for your dedication on a daily basis to the Society and to the profession.
