Outreach Consultation Project - Psychiatrists on Call

About the program
In most parts of Pennsylvania, patients don’t have easy access to psychiatrists. The problem is most acute in regard to child and adolescent psychiatrists, but in some areas there is a real need for other types of psychiatric expertise – e.g., geriatric, dual diagnosis, even general adult.

Primary care physicians (PCP) do their best to handle the challenge, but it is sometimes difficult for them to secure psychiatric evaluations or consultations. Until the supply and distribution of psychiatrists changes, the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Society (PaPS) is addressing this problem by fill the gap through its’ Outreach Consultation Project – Psychiatrists on Call.

Developed by the PaPS with support from the American Psychiatric Association and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, the program makes available volunteer psychiatrists who are willing to take informal consultation phone calls from PCPs who need advice or guidance about a patient they are treating. These calls are in the nature of informal consultations rather than treatment or supervision.

How the program works

• If you are an internist, family physician, or pediatrician, visit the Outreach Consultation Project’s web page, which includes a list of participating PaPS members and their contact information. Choose a psychiatric consultant by geographic area, sub-specialty, or area of interest.
• Call the psychiatrist’s office and mention the Outreach Consultation Project and request help. The psychiatrist will return your call within 24 hours and will either talk to you at that time or set-up a time for a consultation that meets everyone’s schedule. If the psychiatrist cannot provide help within the timeframe you need, simply refer back to the web site listing for a second name.
• The PaPS volunteer will assist you by sharing his or her knowledge and experience, but you make all decisions regarding your patient’s diagnosis and treatment.
